Protein is the one nutrition change that moves the needle most for women over 40, and it is the one most women get wrong. Get it right and you hold muscle, feel full, curb cravings, and make fat loss far easier. Here is exactly how much you need and how to hit it without turning eating into a math problem.
How much protein do women over 40 need?
A practical target for most women over 40 who are active is 0.7 to 1 gram of protein per pound of goal body weight per day. For a woman aiming for around 140 pounds, that is roughly 100 to 140 grams a day.
If that sounds like a lot, it is because most women are eating half of it. And after 40, under-eating protein is one of the fastest ways to lose the muscle that keeps your metabolism running.
Note that this is based on your goal or a healthy body weight, not your current weight if you are carrying extra fat. When in doubt, aim for a gram per pound of where you want to be.
Why protein matters more after 40
- It protects muscle. Your body loses muscle with age unless you train and eat to keep it. Protein is the raw material. Pair it with strength training and you hold onto your metabolism.
- It keeps you full. Protein is the most satisfying nutrient. Higher protein meals mean fewer cravings and less snacking.
- It supports fat loss. Your body burns more energy digesting protein than carbs or fat, and a higher-protein diet makes it easier to stay in a fat-loss range without feeling starved.
- It steadies blood sugar. Protein at each meal blunts the blood sugar swings that drive energy crashes and cravings, which matters more as insulin sensitivity shifts in perimenopause.
How to actually hit your protein target
You do not need shakes all day or a food scale. You need protein at every meal.
- Anchor each meal with a palm-sized (or larger) protein source. Eggs, Greek yogurt, chicken, fish, lean beef, tofu, or cottage cheese.
- Start your day with 30 grams. A protein-forward breakfast sets the tone and cuts afternoon cravings. Eggs, Greek yogurt, or a shake all work.
- Keep easy options on hand. Rotisserie chicken, pre-cooked shrimp, tuna, jerky, edamame, and cottage cheese make hitting your number simple on busy days.
- Use a shake to fill the gap, not replace food. If you end the day 30 grams short, a scoop of protein closes it.
Common protein mistakes women over 40 make
- Coffee-and-toast breakfasts that start the day with almost no protein.
- Big salads with no real protein source, which leave you hungry an hour later.
- Eating most of the day’s protein at dinner instead of spreading it across meals.
- Fearing protein will make them bulky. It will not. It helps you get lean and toned.
